Te Wharekura O Ruatoki Area
School is a co-educational Kaupapa Maori school of approximately 200 Yr
1-13 students. The students attending the school come from a large
geographical area which spans Ruatoki and encompasses Kawerau, TeTeko and
Whakatane. Most of the students travel to school each day by bus.
The school provides high
quality educational opportunities for its students and as a result is well
supported by the communities it serves. Because of the reputation
the school has developed in Kapa Haka and Manu Korero the board is able
to attract high quality staff.
The buildings are set amidst
4 hectares of landscaped grounds and playing fields, which provide a very
pleasant setting. Learning occurs in modern classrooms backed up
with a
wide range of specialist
areas.
Te Wharekura O Ruatoki Area
School has a number of available sporting resources (Ruatoki sports pavilion
with fields and Netball/Tennis courts) which are frequently used by the
community. The community Marae, are nestled within the local native
forests, lands and river and streams and a frequently used by the wharekura.
Local Health and ‘other’ educational amenities are available and well-utilised
by the wharekura. Local kaumatua avail themselves tirelessly to ensure
that the ‘special character’ of the Tuhoe Iwi is maintained.
The community is very supportive
of the school in sporting, fundraising and cultural events. Response
to requests for parent help for trips and special projects is excellent.
There is a Kohanga Reo next
door to the school that many children attend before coming to the kura.
Activities available within the community include rugby, touch rugby,
netball, basketball, horse-sports,
kayaking, bush & mountain walking and jet-boating.
A community doctor
visits the valley twice a week and a mobile dental clinic visits the kura
annually. There are many Tuhoe initiatives that exist in our community
(a worthwhile project for students to research).
Pictured left a many pictures

Administration Building
Te Konae Aronui which was built in 1995 and the design is reflective of
the community and Iwi in which it is located. Also included are the 2004
Ball and the 2004 Secondary Schools National Kapa Haka Competitions. To
